Update from Councillors on Community Developments in Birley Ward

Birley ward councillors have been working hard in several areas of community development in the Birley Ward and here is an update.

Community Newsletter
The Birley Ward Councillors are increasingly concerned that more and more people in the community are becoming lonely or isolated. They have worked with local groups and Voluntary Action Sheffield to produce a newsletter, and they have provided funding for the production and delivery of the first few issues. This newsletter has been produced to promote local groups who provide activities or services for the people of all ages in the Birley Ward community. In particular it will provide information to any lonely and isolated people whether young or old. The newsletter will be delivered by community group volunteers and councillors to all 8,000 households in the Birley ward so watch this space. It should be hitting your door step in early July.

Developing Childrens Facilities
Councillors have set up meetings between council officers and Anthony Cronshaw to discuss the possibility of developing facilities for children and young people around the Frecheville Park and Pond area.

New Community Group – ‘The Friends of the Craggs’
Councillors have been meeting and supporting residents on Longstone Crescent who have now come together to form a community group to look after the area known locally as ‘The Craggs’. This group came about after concerns from residents were raised with councillors about anti-social behaviour and fires in the woodland behind their properties. There has been a litter pick of the area and presentations held at Birley Academy on the dangers and consequences of fire. This was followed up by a presentation to the young people who took part in the litter pick where the Lord Mayor handed out certificates. If you live in the area and would like to get involved please do not hesitate to contact your local councillors.

  1. Over the past months I have written twice to the Mayor of Sheffield
City Region seeking information about possible discussions between the Members of the City Region in the event of serious
flooding along our East Coast Area’s. My question is based upon the Scientific Forecasts of rising Sea Levels due to the melting of
Ice at both the Nth & Sth Pole. Thousands of people currently living
in areas which are liable to be flooded by rising sea levels within the
next few years shall be seeking rehousing on the higher ground to the west, in the Sheffield City Region. I am awaiting an answer?
