Birley Environmental Group – Public Discussion

On Wednesday 18th November at the Frecheville Library there will be a public meeting discussing the green and open spaces of the Birley Ward. Everyone is invited to attend. We will be sharing ideas on how local people can work together and take pride in our many green and open spaces. If you have any ideas on how our local environment could be improved and want to get involved, or are simply interested in learning more, please come along.

  1. Greg It is great that Birley People are interested in the quality of
the environment.Climate change is perhaps a far greater threat to
humanity than Terrorism, that doesn’t mean we ignore the threat of
terrorism, we need to treat both of these equally. Extreme weather
patterns are increasingly man made and capable of killing many
thousands in one storm and destroy Cities that have taken many years
to build.Co-operation helps build peace and healthier communities.
Best wishes for your initiative! Ken.

  2. THE ECONOMY. OSBORNE’S AUTUMN STATEMENT TAKES BRITAIN INTO UNCHARTED WATER’S.In taking the decisions to cut further into police budgets George Osborne is exposing the British people to
greater risks. Already Police numbers have fallen to 1970 levels,
at a time when world wide terrorism is on the increase and Britain
contemplating War in Syria. His moves make no Economic sense, in terms of security his policies could suggest he has lost any sense of rational decision making.Kenneth Curran Snr.

  3. THE FAT CATS HAVE THEIR WAY!
CHANCELLOR OSBORNE GIVES IN TO THE FAT CATS. Plans for a voluntary
code of practice on UK Tax planning by multinational corporations
have been quietly ditched by the Treasury after fierce lobbying
by big business. The Tories constantly give way to the Fat Cats
in society. The commitment to abolish CHILD POVERTY BY 2020 was
never mentioned as the Number of families receiving free childcare
slashed by a third. The Tories are robbing children to support
their FAT CAT FRIENDS. Ken Curran Snr

  4. THERE IN NO PLAN B FOR PLANET EARTH.
For several years I have been banging on about the serious danger’s for the future of the Human Race if we do not alter our lifestyles.
Far to few within the ranks of the broad LABOUR MOVEMENT were bothered to heed the warnings. Scientists over the past 2 decades
have been warning of the dangerous path our materialistic way of
life is leading. This week the UN conference of the parties on Climate Change is meeting in Paris to try and reach an agreement on
the reduction of Green House Gases by all the Nations of the World.
it is imperative that a satisfactory agreement is reached that works. On the issues of how we live and treat the earth mankind
has reached the Rubicon, the historical river of no return. We have reached the point where our choices have been reduced. We
have to change our lifestyles and reduce our demands upon the Planet. We have to produce what we need & not what we want,we have to learn to share the resources of the planet. If this generation are either unable to alter the we live or refuse to change, then our children and grandchildren shall pay a terrible
price for our behaviour. I know this message is not what people want to hear, however the threat to humanity is real and we need
to face the issues now. There shall not be another chance!

  5. The Labour Party was born out of the struggles of Men and
women at the end of the 19th Century. It was formed as a reaction
to the levels of exploitation of working people, as capitalism grew
and Companies which had formerly been owned and controlled mainly
by local men who often had some relationship with their workforce.
The nature of these companies changed and became Public Companies
allowing those who could afford it to buy Shares in the Company.
These measures changed the whole relationship between the owners
and there workforce. Unlike the original owner who had to invest
his Money and personal efforts into creating the enterprise. The
introduction of Share Holders also created a demand from them to
obtain greater financial returns on their shares culminating in even greater pressure upon the Workers. It was within this Environment that Trade Unionism and the Labour party was born.

  6. Politics Today.
The Labour Party has seized on new costings of George Osborne’s
Welfare changes to argue he still plans to take £3 Billion a year
out of the pockets of Britain’s poorest families,Despite his climb
down over Tax Credits. source Guardian Sat,5th December2015. He still intends to squeeze poor families in spite of having his
original proposals rejected by the House of Lords and even some
back bench Tory MPs. It seems George Osborne is making a bid for
    Ebineezer Scrooge’s job this Xmas!

  7. POLITICS TODAY. THE ECONOMY OF SHEFFIELD CITY REGION.
The recent news of the closure of our Steel Industry is most
depressing and follows a pattern that is occurring right across
Europe. One of the factors effecting all of the Manufacturing Sector
is the price paid for Electricity. The Government could give real
help to assist.Of course the Subsidised Chinese Steel is the long term threat to industry across Europe. I believe Local, Constituency,District & Regional Labour Parties have to support
the just and legitimate campaign’s of the Trade Unions and indeed any other groups seeking social and economic justice. If we fail
to heed the calls of others for help we are not fulfilling our
role as a Labour Party. The ripple effect of the job losses across the Sheffield City Region shall multiply several times as the ripple effect spreads out well beyond the manufacturing sector. This at time when Government policies are effecting
Further Education, Training. Health Service Cuts. Even the newly
Emerging Hydro and Solar Energy Industries are complaining about
cuts. Cuts in Investment in Green Energy at a time when Scientists the world over are forecasting more and more disasters. This Tory Government are gambling against unknown odds,Putting not only the lively hoods of people at risk, but their lives.

  8. TONIGHT IN CUMBRIA,NORTHUMBERLAND,& MOST SCOTLAND
STORM DESMOND IS WREAKING HAVOC UPON THE PEOPLE.IT CERTAINLY SEEMS
AS THOUGH CLIMATE CHANGE IS WELL AND TRULY UNDER WAY.

  9. Politics Today. Sunday 6th December.
Sheffield really has become A TALE OF TWO CITIES over the past 2
month apart from (THE BUSES) the major issues for Fulwood, Ecclesall, and Nether Edge have been the future of trees. While in
the South East of the City the issue has been and is increasingly
about maintaining essential services and maintaining the food bank
to feed the Poor. Although only a few miles apart, it is almost
    another Planet.

  10. OPEN DOOR COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTRE.
I had the pleasure of attending the Students Awards Ceremony on
Wednesday2nd of December. The Centre does a great job with very
little funding,if you think you could improve either your job
prospects by learning, or even make your retirement years more
interesting. Or a Young person who is shy or with learning difficulties I suggest you visit OPEN DOOR and ask for Terry or
any member of Staff, will make you feel welcome!

  11. Storm Desmond has delivered an early Xmas Present to George Osborne
Chancellor of Exchequer. Its just a few weeks ago since he made his
climb down on Tax Credits. Since then he has been left wriggling
around looking for other ways of finding the money to make his budget objectives stack up. Along comes along Storm Desmond to blow
down Osborne’s whole house of cards. The damage done by Desmond the
first real storm of winter presents him with a financial bill which
shall probably cost £Billions. I have no sympathy for Osborne who
has continued to ignore those people who have continued to tell him
that his objective of balancing the books is an impossibility. The
Nations Economy is not like the Economy of the average household,
is a far more complex animal. While having no sympathy for Osborne, all my sympathy is with those folk who’s homes have been
flooded and damaged, and those small businesses upon which many of the small towns in Cumbria and the Scottish Border depend. Perhaps he may now regret his decisions to cut support to the emerging industries for the production of Solar, Hydraulic, and Wind Turbines. These are the industries which shall provide us with the alternatives vital in allowing Britain to meet its international obligations to cut our Carbon Emissions. As I said on the fifth of December. While he continues to ignore the threats of climate change to the UK he is gambling against unknown odds.

  12. TORY HYPOCRISY!
OFFICIAL CLIMATE CHANGE ADVISERS REVEAL THEY TOLD GOVERNMENT TO
TACKLE THE INCREASE IN HOMES IN FLOOD RISK AREA’S BUT ADVICE WAS
NOT TAKEN! Source Guardian 10th december. The decision not to develop a strategy to address the increased flood risk came just
weeks before Storm Desmond. According Local Councils the North West
has suffered an estimated £500million in damage. The Chancellor
George (Scrooge) Osborne has announced he is to contribute just
£50million towards repairs and renewal for Cumbria & Lancashire.

  13. Most of the comments I have made recently have been related to the
Environment and its link to Climate Change. While some folk can see
the links between keeping our local environment clean such as rubbish and litter making our estates look shabby. They fail to see
some of the other factors around us which also have a bearing upon
the general health and well being of people in the area. When I first moved into the area 40 odd years ago there were far less car
owners than there was in the late 1960’s. When The Estates were
planned I don’t believe there was any comprehension of the extent
car ownership would impinge upon the community at large

  14. The Climate Change Conference which ended yesterday 12 December in
Paris has been described by the French President as”This is a major
step for mankind. The agreement will not be perfect for everyone,if
everyone reads it with their own interests in mind.” He could well
have had George Osborne in mind when he spoke. For it is only about
3 weeks ago the Osborne cut back on support for Solar Energy, Hydro Turbine Programmes and Wind Turbines plus insulation. We have seen
Osborne do Uturn’s, in the UK signing up to the Paris agreement
should mean Osborne doing somersaults in order to comply.Hopefully
yesterday was a good day for the future of the World!

  15. POLITICS TODAY.The NHS Trusts are £2.2 Billion in the Red. Chaos
reign’s at Accident & Emergency Units across England & Wales. Its
a good job the weather remains mild, if it gets colder then things
could really get serious. Not that life is a bowl of cherries for
most folk. While Birley is not regarded as a depressed area, there
shall be some folk feeling the pinch. While prices have been stable
Wages have been depressed. My thoughts this Xmas apart from the
people dying of starvation due to the massive droughts in Africa is
with the poor Syrian people caught up in a civil war. Over my life
of 84 years I don’t think there has been a time apart from the 2nd World War when things have been as complex as they are today.
As I write it was only about 6 hours ago when the government decided to allow fracking to take place in order to explore for
natural Gas.Almost all of the potential drilling sites are located in the North of England. With the Peak District a one of the designated sites. I wonder what the response of the Government would have been if the Home Counties & the Sth East had been found to have potential gas reserves below their posh
properties? I think you probably think like me, they would have
found some obscure reason’s for not proceeding.

  16. The Environment in which we live and share with each other looks
like becoming the main issue of the Century.I posted comments related to Climate Change on the 11th &13th of December as I write
there further reports of floods again in Cumbria. Following floods
in 2010 new flood defences were built which the experts said the
new defences would be adaquate for a 100 years. Today we know just
how wrong the experts were, as the defences have been breached 3
time in one month. Last month the local Councillors along with
members of the local community and individual members of the Labour
Party attended. The issues discussed were mainly around maintaining the Green Spaces and litter etc; however the Environment is a huge subject. At this point I am only thinking
aloud in the hope that others will join in the conversation.
The Former Vice President of the United States Al Gore had a special film produced on the subject. It is very enlightening, I am asking if people would be interested in a showing of the film
at the Frecheville Library. If you are interested in the idea please post a comment.

  17. LONDON MUST STOP SUCKING CASH FROM THE REST OF BRITAIN. SIMON JENKINS (GUARDIAN X 2015 XMAS EVE) I don’t always agree with Simon
Jenkins however on this issue he produces the evidence to support
his point of view. For example he quotes the latest figure’s for
infrastructure spending on each Londoner is £5,500 per year, against
Yorkshire’s £580 a year per head and the north-east’s £220.per head. The former Finance Minister Vince Cable has described London
as a giant suction machine draining the life out of the rest of the
country.Such an imbalance in the distribution of infrastructure
is bad for the Economy as a whole. The Tories are not really interested in the UK as a whole as long as it can support London
and the Home Counties. Ken Curran Snr.

  18. Hello & a happy New Year. For anyone who has followed my contributions to The Birley Labour Party blog since the beginning of
December 2015. Most of those contributions had a theme based around
our living Environment. My reason for concentrating upon that theme
is because I believe the greatest threat to humanity, is humanity
itself. If human beings cannot change the way it relates to fellow
human beings and nature, then our existence is in peril. The floods
we have had over December are a symptom of our problem. In the short
term there is little we can do to reduce or regulate our rainfall.
What we can do and should have been doing is being better prepared.
The fact we are not is down to Politicians ignoring the advice of
the people they employ to advise them. The floods of December from which many thousands of people have had to endure.were made at 11 Downing Street by George Osborne Chancellor of the Exchequer, aided and abetted by the man next door Mr Cameron.
The evidence is revealed in a paper written by a body representing all major organisations responsible for flood defences, and presented to Ministers on the 30th November2015
The Tories cannot deny the facts, however they attempted to hide
the existence of the paper only to find it had been leaked out.

  19. Yesterday George Osborne told Parliament that the UK economy was
facing a cocktail of threats because of the unstable World Markets.
In particular the decline in the Chinese economy was a major Factor
which would have implications for us. Yet only 4 weeks ago in his
Autumn Statement he claimed we were coming out of the Crisis he
claimed he had inherited from Labour. There was light at the end of
the tunnel. About 10 weeks ago he toured China urging the Chinese to
invest in Britain plus portraying the Chinese as an example the UK
should follow. All of a sudden the Chinese are a threat to our stability. The reality is the British Economy is in a bad way,and
rather than the Economy continuing to recover it is actually due to get worse. No mention of the Great Northern Power House, I am
afraid that shall remain an illusion like all of their broken promises.

  20. WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT?
Prime Minister Cameron is to CALL FOR PARENTS TO TAKE LESSONS ON HOW
TO CONTROL CHILDREN! As this call is being made I wonder how many
folk can remember that around 18 month’s ago Cameron called in to his Local for a pint accompanied by his young daughter. After his
drink he left leaving the Pub without her. It has yet to be established whether it was Child Neglect of forgetful behaviour.
He should be the first Parent to sign up for his new classes!

  21. CLIMATE CHANGE DISASTER IS THE BIGGEST THREAT TO THE GLOBAL ECONOMY. ( WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM )14 JAN 2015
A catastrophe caused by climate change is seen as the biggest potential threat to the global economy in the
current year 2016, according to a survey carried out by 750 experts for the WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM. Apart from the
physical effects of Climate Change the Insurance Companies are voicing concerns. Cecilia Reyes, chief risk Officer
for Marsh & Mclennan and Zurich Insurance Group is reported, “Climate change is exacerbating more risks than ever
before in terms of water crises, food shortages, constrained economic growth, weaker societal cohesion and increased
security risks. I have been writing for over 3 months on the question of climate change, yet to the best of my
knowledge their has been not one response over what I have written. Either no one agrees with what I write,or they
agree but cannot be bothered to respond. Or they do not believe what I have written. Or they couldn’t care what
    happens! Regards Ken Curran.

  23. WHAT ARE WE FIGHTING FOR? Birley Branch of the Labour Party fights to ensure we get a fair share of Council Resources to try and ensure we can maintain a reasonable level of essential services in the area and where-ever
possible bring about improvements. As you probably aware Local Government in terms of resources available is
going through the worst period financially since the Second World War.That was 70years ago in 1946 over the past
10years, for the first time we are witnessing a reduction in our standards of living. Your Councillors so far have
managed to avoid some very difficult problems and hope to be able to continue that work on your behalf. In May2016
all out elections shall take place where you shall be invited to elect 3 Councillors to represent you on Sheffield
City Council. Between Now and May your Labour Councillors shall be undertaking a public conversation by visiting
people to discuss the issues which concern all of us in Sheffield. We shall be asking you for your continued
support in May & hoping to continue to support Birley in the future! Britain & indeed the World is beset with some very serious problems, they are almost to numerous to mention them all. The question of Climate Change we
believe is going to be the biggest challenge facing humanity in the future, there will be increasing demands for
ever more resources do deal with the consequences of floods and disaster’s. Working together in unison we can and will continue to sustain our local communities. Thank You!

  25. Some thing Prime Minister David Cameron never talks about. David Cameron is a descendant of the 18th Century
Chief of the Clan Cameron who supported Bonnie Prince Charlie in his bid to place the Stuarts back on the throne.
The family held and still does vast tracts of land in Inverness Shire. During the 18th Century the Camerons acquired Plantations where they held slaves to grow Tobacco. The slaves received no wages, they had to build the shacks they lived in and in order to live had to grow their own food. There was no health care & no Education.
It should be little wonder that the Cameron’s became very wealthy, and ended up being the owners of much of old
Glasgow. After making a fortune out of not paying for labour and a great more besides, they went into Banking
where they became even wealthier. David never talks about his links to the Chief of Clan Cameron, after all it
might just besmirch his image. Remember you read it here first. Ken Curran

  26. Wednesday 27thJan 2016. Today the Sheffield NHS Trust Announced that it was 11 £Million Pounds in the Red. This is
after making emergency savings and receiving big cuts in Treasury Grants. It was in October I raised this possibility Urging some form of campaign to help make the general public aware of the fact our essential services
are at a critical stage. Neither The Constituency Party or Sheffield District Labour Party have done anything,
the Constituency Party Supported my resolution and send it on to District where it was received. In both parties
my resolution received unanimous support from the delegates.I would have thought the Executive Committee’s of
both Parties by now would have been doing something about the decision they took. My conclusion is that the Party
has a big leadership problem that needs to be resolved if we are to win future Elections. In spite of our recent
substantial increase in our membership the present local leadership appears unable or unwilling to respond to what
after all is the wish of its delegates. Ken Curran Snr.

  28. The Crisis in the NHS which I spoke about at the October meetings of the Birley Branch, The Sth East Sheffield
Constituency & Sheffield District Labour Party arrived on Wednesday 27th of January with the announcement that the
Sheffield Hospitals NHS Trust had incurred an £11 Million Deficit in its Finances. After I went through all of
the procedures to ensure the Party members were made aware of the pending crisis. My comments were to urge the
Local Leadership to raise public awareness of the threat to our most important public service.
In spite of my call getting the unanimous support of the delegates, nothing has been done. This is in spite of
apologies from the Chair of the District Party who told me he wasn’t sure it was his job to do anything. I am
sorry I feel it is important to raise this question publicly. We in the Labour Party have a duty to society to
do what ever we can to defend those most vulnerable in society. I know there are limits as to what we can do or
achieve through our collective efforts, but to do nothing is very sad! As they told me at school, you must do better. I write this with a heavy Heart. Ken Curran Snr.

  30. NHS CONTINUED(SHEFFIELD NHS TRUST> £11 MILLION IN DEBT! Monitor & NHS TRUST DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY have issued the
following instructions. Trusts must reduce staffing levels in order to control their Budgets. This instruction
contradicts government Ministers who 3 years ago ordered Hospitals to do the opposite. On the 15th ofJanuary2016
Monitor&NHS Trust Development Authority told the 241 NHS Trusts they supervise to dramatically reduce their
(FINANCIAL STRESS) if they want to receive money from a £1.8bn bail out available on April 1st. source Guardian 30th Jan. According to the Kings Trust (Health Think Tank) In order to save £1 Million you would have to lose 25
Nursing Staff. With the Sheffield NHS debt of £11 Million using the Kings Trust Formula Sheffield Hospitals would
have to sack 275 Nurses. Is that what we want at the time of important Local Elections? If the minds of the
electorate is focussed upon the NHS, will they see voting for Councillors as important? It is the task of Labour
to link the crisis of the Health Service to that of the crisis in Local Government. That so far we have failed to do! Ken Curran Snr.

  31. CAMERON’S FIASCO! The reality behind David Cameron’s so called negotiations in Europe has done nothing to avoid
the obvious divisions inside the Tory Government.Cameron has tried get changes in the agreements between
the European Executive and the Member States. To use his own words”bring back power to Westminster”my reading of
what is on offer is for Westminster to be allowed to make limited changes regarding the benefits paid to
European Workers residing in Britain. What has been achieved is a right to alter benefits payments provided he gets
the agreement of each individual member state. The negotiations have been a smokescreen to try and hide the gulf
of opinion that exists inside the Tory Party. Being in the European union means finding compromises and agreements based upon co-operation. The Tory Party doesn’t do co-operation,they actually believe that other
nations are second class states. Ken Curran

  32. IF I WAS ASKED HAS ANYTHING CHANGED AROUND THE BIRLEY WARD OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS? What would my answer be. There
has been a number of things I have noticed. On the Frecheville Estate we have seen a thinning out of the large
trees, on one hand I have been sorry to see them go. On the other hand unfortunately, they had reached such a size
they were damaging the properties nearest them. Some times things cannot be avoided, there is one thing that can
and should be avoided. That is the amount of litter left lying all around, old Pizza boxes, half eaten take away,s.Empty Cans & bottles. On some day’s the ampunt of litter lying around the Shops,Gennels and streets near
the shops. In this world the tendency is to find somebody to blame for our circumstances. The folk living on the
Birley Ward, particularly those who frequent the Shops and Pubs on Birley Moor Cannot Blame Anyone But Themselves.
The area is a disgrace. The state around the shops undoes all of the work done by the People who volunteer and
and keep the pond area nice and tidy,or the good people who volunteer their time to provide us with a Library Service. We should be proud of where we live, but i am afraid it is looking very shabby & unwelcoming.

  34. The controversial issue of Fracking May be heading our way. On maps indicating area’s regarded as suitable for the
exploration of Natural Gas are Nth East Derbyshire and most of Sheffield. The Government are ready to licence for
exploration upon applications being applied for.If Gas is found the intention is for to allow Contractors to
extract the Gas. In the United States there have been reports of serious earth tremors in areas where extraction
has taken place. Stories of the Water Table being polluted and drinking water poisoned. In England around Blackpool it has caused severe Earth Tremor’s. What is Your opinion? Have you Fears? HAVE YOUR SAY!

led Councils & local Conservative Associations in the Tory Party heartlands. The man who told the country(We are

    £19M,Hampshire,£16M,Hertfordshire,£14M,Essex,£12M, West Sussex,£11M,Kent and £9M,Buckinghamshire. In a so called
Democracy this is a disgraceful use of power.

  36. The Moral Economy. What Is it? Does it Exist? Yes it does exist but it is not universally accepted in the vast
majority of business’s or in society at large. It could be argued that it was first applied by Robert Owen at
New Lanark. However in very small ways I believe it has been around a very long time. In the Ten Commandments we
were told (DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD BE DONE BY) In simple terms it means treating people decently. Two recent
examples of why we need a Moral Economy was the Walk Out Of Liverpool Football Fans over the club’s plan to increase ticket prices. Taking the cost of top tickets to £77 a game.According to reports Top clubs are awash with
TV Money earned by Televising games. However the walk out organised by the Supporters Club eventually left the
club Directors & Staff to watch the game. Once the supporters walked out, the game went flat, having no atmosphere.
The Club Directors have had to reverse their rise in prices. Another example was the admission of the CEO ofGoogle he didn’t know how much he earned.

  37. Mental Health Crisis Revealed in Leaked Report. Observer 14th of FEB 2016. A devastating picture of England’s
Three quarters of those with psychiatric conditions are receiving no help from the Service and that sick children
are being sent “almost anywhere in the country” Six years David Cameron pledged to put Mental Wellbeing at the centre of his Government. Just like his other promises, they are all paper thin. He has promised to end Child Poverty, Protect Essential Services. This Government should go down in History as the GOVERNMENT OF BROKEN PROMISES.

  38. Report of Birley Branch Meeting February 16th, After dealing with the matters arising from the previous meeting
we proceeded to receive the Councillors Reports. Inevitably the issue of the Trees in the Rustlings Road area,
we were informed that the people who were protesting have now served an injunction upon the City Council. As a
result the discussion was curtailed in order that anything said would not influence the outcome of the Legal
Challenge. We proceeded to discuss local Traffic Problems, Coun, Mcgowan infomed the meeting that a group of
young students from Birley Junior School had carried out a survey of traffic movement adjacent to the School, the
report is to go to the City Council. The problem of Mental Health was discussed and a future meeting is to discuss
the issue further. That meetings discussion shall be led by a Party Member who has many years service in the Mental Health Service. In addition the forthcoming Local Elections and the European Referendum were discussed.
The need for Party members to engage in the distribution of leaflets was expressed, plus volunteers. We also feel there is a need to encourage supporters to put POSTERS IN THEIR WINDOWS OR ON POSTS IN GARDENS. The Meeting
ended just after 9pm. A very good and informative Meeting.

  39. 2016 is going to be the most important for the people of Britain and Europe since the Second World War.I shall be
voting to remain in the European Union, not for my benefit but for my grand children and future generations. The
world needs people to Co-operate in order to meet the huge challenges facing humanity.Over the past 250 years
mankind has developed what today is a world wide Industrialised Environment. On one hand it has produced great
inventions which have enabled us to improve living standards particularly in the Northern Hemisphere. Now the
Indian, Chinese,& South America are Industrialising the point has been reached where in order for humanity to live
we need to find ways to eliminate the huge threat Global Industrialisation poses for humanity. To do that will
require a complete rethink on the part of everyone. We have been told that wealth will trickle down so that all can
benefit from wealth creation. We only need to look at the huge imbalance in the distribution of wealth in the UK
to know the Private Enterprise System does not see wealth distribution as one of its functions.
We have to create a Fairer Britain,a Fairer Europe & Fairer World,to get there we need to maximise co-operation.

  40. WE MUST STAY IN EUROPE!The people advocating leaving the European Union are a collection of social and political
misfits.George Galloway, David Ike, Boris Johnson, Iain Duncan Smith,Michael Gove, They are inviting the Electorate to join with them on a journey to nowhere. They are trying to imagine Britain still has an Empire, in a
sense they are living in the past. I prefer the real world, in spite of all of its problems and challenges we are
better of working with others who have similar desires and wishes for the future.Voting with Boris and company is
like putting out to sea in an open boat without Sails, Engine, Oars or Compass and left to face the Storms alone.
They remind me of the Charles Dicken’s character Mr Micawber, hoping something will turn up! Ken Curran Snr.

  41. OSBORNE WARNS OF FURTHER SPENDING CUTS AS GLOBAL “STORM CLOUDS”LOOM! This man has been a disaster for Britain,
every promise he has made during his stewardship as Chancellor has been broken, he is now claiming the Global
Economy is to blame for the state of affairs here in Britain. He ignores the fact that the British Economy
is the fifth largest economy in the world which for about 6 years has been at a virtual standstill. The fact he
ignores all calls to ease up on spending cuts, he is making the situation world wide worse.
    Ken Curran Snr.

  42. WHEN THE BULLINGDON BOYS FALL OUT.Tory MPs are threatening Cameron because he criticised Boris Johnson’s behaviour
over the EU Referendum. If Cameron doesn’t stop criticising Boris, they are liable to organise a vote of no
confidence in the Prime Minister.Boris and his friends are unable to answer the questions which naturally flow
from their decision to back leaving the EU. They have no answers! BORIS IS THE PROVERBIAL BULL IN A CHINA SHOP
HE HAS COMPLETELY MISREAD THE SITUATION THE TORIES HAVE CREATED FOR THEMSELVES. The problem the Tory Party is
finding is the fact that many of the problems facing Britain are historically of their making. When we see what is
happening the USA over the Election of a NEW PRESIDENT and the behaviour of the leading Republican contender.
The World Needs a united Europe to give some stability to a troubled world.TRUMP is a dangerous man and not the
kind of ally we need. Ken Curran Snr.

  43. Something is radically wrong about the way we live today! We have the ability to send men and women into space to
carry out all manner of Experiments. Our homes are full of technological gadgets, We have machines that are
putting thousands out of work & the rate is to increase. Yet we are now telling people who have spent a lifetime
paying their Taxes and National Insurance Contributions that we cannot afford to pay them Pensions until there
70s. The distribution of Wealth in Britain per head is roughly what it was in 1913 in percentage terms. Is this
progress where politicians are forcing Old People to have to work until they are near 80years of age. If we are
really a civilised country should we be forcing elderly people to continue to seek work. While at the same time
allowing industry and commerce to put people out of work and replace them with Robotic Machines in the workplace.
And the wealthy pay a lesser percentage of their income in taxation than someone just above the Minimum Wage.
WE NEED A FAIRER BRITAIN WHICH CARES FOR THOSE WHO THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN CANNOT MANAGE IN THIS CRAZY WORLD!

  45. AS I HAVE MENTIONED RECENTLY 2O16 IS GOING TO BE A MOST IMPORTANT YEAR FOR THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED KINGDOM
ANYONE WHO REFUSES TO USE THEIR VOTE IS REFUSING TO FACE THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES TOWARDS THEMSELVES, THEIR FAMILIES
FRIENDS AND NEIGHBOURS. MOST OF ALL IT IS A BETRAY’L OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR AND THOSE WHO FOUGHT AND WORKED TO DEFEAT FASCISM. IT HAS GIVEN US 70 YEARS OF PEACE IN EUROPE AND THE OPPORTUNITY
TO CONTINUE BUILDING UPON WHAT HAS BEEN ACHIEVED.THAT IS NOT TO DENY THERE ARE MANY PROBLEMS FACING US AND ALL
THE PEOPLES OF EUROPE, HOWEVER WORKING TOGETHER IN CO-OPERATION IS THE WAY FORWARD NOT VOTING OR VOTING TO LEAVE
EUROPE WILL SOLVE NOTHING. AT LOCAL LEVEL THE COUNCIL ELECTIONS ARE VITAL. LABOUR IS WORKING EXTRA HARD IN ORDER
TO SUPPORT LOCAL ESSENTIAL SERVICES. THE TORY CUTS ARE DAMAGING PEOPLES LIVES AND FUTURE PROSPECTS, HOWEVER
WORKING WITH LOCAL PEOPLE TO FIND LOCAL SOLUTIONS LABOUR SHALL BE PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE.USE YOUR VOTE!

  46. TODAY THE 11th of March 1916 100 years ago a great Yorkshireman was born, Harold Wilson was Labour Prime Minister
was born in Huddersfield. He was, and still is the only Prime Minister to have been born in the industrial North.
I was a young man when I was fortunate to hear his famous speech at the Labour Party Conference in Scarborough
1964. He was the first British to talk about a new revolution that would have a dramatic effect upon the way we
lived. He called upon the Labour Movement to prepare to meet up “The White Hot Heat Of New Technology” he urged
Labour to be ready to embrace the new technology. We were told that if managed properly there were huge benefits
to be gained. His Governments invested in Education by building Polytechnics in every City in the UK he also had
New Technical Colleges built in every Town in Britain. Today the Universities of Huddersfield, Hull, Sheffield
Hallam, Sunderland, Newcastle, and many more are the great legacy Harold Wilson a Labour Prime Minister left to
the British People. Harold was also a great Supporter of Huddersfield Town FC since his boyhood.A Great Man!

  47. JARROW TO PARLIAMENT.16TH AUGUST-6TH SEPTEMBER(PEOPLE’S MARCH FOR THE NHS. WE ARE A GROUP OF MUMS FROM TYNESIDE
WHO ARE CONCERNED AND OUTRAGED AT THE ASSAULT BY THE GOVERNMENT ON OUR PRIZED POSSESSION.) WE PLAN TO ARRIVE IN
SHEFFIELD ON THE 26TH OF AUGUST 2016. WE INVITE THE PEOPLE OF SHEFFIELD TO JOIN US. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT IN OUR
FIGHT TO SAVE OUR HEALTH SERVICE BRING YOUR BANNERS AND JOIN THE MARCH. OUR FIGHT IS YOUR FIGHT, JOIN US!
THE NHS WILL LAST AS LONG
AS THERE ARE THE FOLK LEFT
WITH THE FAITH TO FIGHT FOR IT.

NYE BEVAN 1948 FOUNDER OF THE NHS.

  48. Officially it is Spring! And those of us who do a bit in our
gardens or allotments shall be considering whether or not to grow
vegetables or not. As my wife and I are getting on a bit the amount
of Gardening we do is governed by our ache’s and pains. We shall be
planting Runner Beans and perhaps an other variety. We shall also
be growing Tomatoes in our Greenhouse again. In recent years we have been fortunate to have very decent crops, dependent upon the
weather. It was mainly through doing a bit in the garden that my
interest in Climate Change started. About 15 or so years ago the
debate over Climate Change started, at that point few people were
concious of what we might expect if Climate Change became a reality. Over the past 3years or so we have witnessed Storms, Floods, Landslides, Droughts, and War’s all of which are linked in one way or another to climate change. In The Guardian of Tue’s
15 March it reported that according to Nasa data global temperature records during February were a (Shocker) and warned of a “climate emergency” what exactly that will mean for my few
Beans & Tomatoes is yet unknown. I am convinced however that due
to Mankinds contributions towards Pollution we are collectively making the World an increasingly dangerous place.

  49. Osborne under scrutiny after his move to disguise £56bn black hole in our public finanances. It is less than 3 month ago since Osborne
told us the crisis was over, promising that soon we would be basking
in the sunshine again. Now he tells us the storm clouds are gathering due to the crisis of the Chinese Economy. It is less than
a week since Will Hutton Chief Executive of the Work Foundation
and advisor on Economics to past Governments stated that his view
of Osborne’s Ability of Economics. He said that Osborne was not
capable of passing a GSE Exam in economics. There is worse to come!

  50. George Osborne is not up to the job of Chancellor quite apart from
his attempt to make the Disabled pay for his deficencies, he can
no longer pretend he can achieve his objective of balancing the
books. The more they cutback, the more the demand to maintain our
crumbling infrastructure grows. Iain Duncan Smith’s resignation
reveals the tensions that exist among the Tory Leadership.Smith’s
resignation letter to Cameron taunts the Prime Minister with a
quote of his infamous statement (WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER).More
than Smith among the Cabinet knew Cameron was lying to the nation
when he said it. They all knew he was lying!

and sacking Parent Governors. Disabled People who the Tories feel
are all capable of work. Young people with degrees who cannot find
suitable employment, and cannot afford to either Rent or Buy a place to live.Ex Miner’s and former Steel Workers thrown on the

  56. On the morning of the 1st of April I came across the lovely sight
of the daffodils which surrounds the Frecheville Community Centre.
It is a credit to our local volunteers, they deserve a big thank you. Quite a contrast to the scene on the grass adjacent to the
Birley Hotel. All of our local volunteer’s are doing a splendid job,
they clearly are a credit to not Just Frecheville but the City of
    Sheffield.

  57. Its been a hectic week for David Cameron, revealing the fact he has
been the recipient of monies from investment trust operating in a
Tax Haven. After spending 5 days trying to deny that the information was an attempt to smear his character. The Birley Branch Banner was to the fore on Saturday’s early evening news on
both ITV & BBC evening news. The banner was demonstrating Birley’s
support for Civil Servants losing over 200 jobs in the City, and
the TATA Steel Workers & Junior Doctors. A Junior Doctor addressed
the large crowd warning of the Cuts in the NHS preparing for
Privatisation of our Hospitals He urged people to write to the
Health Authority telling them of their opposition to what is taking place. As a Branch I believe it is time we took some active decisions regarding the Austerity Cutbacks!

  58. April 11th 2016. Amid the hurley burly of life it was a very pleasant surprise to observe a fully grown Heron standing on the
roof of the house opposite mine at (9.10am this morning preening
its self in the weak sunshine as it penetrated the morning mist.
I have lived at Frecheville for best part of 40years and in that time it is only the second time I have seen a Heron actually on the
estate. I have seen them down in the Moss Valley, fishing in the
various ponds and pools along the river. Always a most pleasing sight, we are fortunate to live in such a beautiful area. We shall have to continue working together to maintain this jewel amid all of the pressures of today’s world.

  60. The release of the Panama indicate a far deeper sickness than the
fact the Prime Minister has in the past been the recipient of money
gained from an off shore tax avoidance trust. It reveals global
capitalism has become an organised and legalised form of corruption.Such developments undermine the whole fabric of democracy and the rule of law. Creating an Elite that by the wealth
they own gives them the ability to buy anything they want. Whether
it is goods or people the strength of their wealth distorts what
ever they have an interest in. Eventually it will destroy society
unless we, the common people take the appropriate steps to curb
the Greed which in recent years is apparent.

  61. Over a couple of Months ago I mentioned the possibility of Fracking in the Sheffield Area to extract (shale Gas) The Labour
Party has real concerns about the potential environmental impact
of hydraulic fracturing, known as fracking. In the last Parliament
Labour worked to try and obtain amendments to the Government’s
Infrastructure Bill.Labours amendments were supported by Greenpeace,Friends of the Earth, RSPB, WaterUK,the Local Government Association and the trade unions Unite & GMB. Labour
has long insisted that fracking should only take place under tough
regulatory condidions to protect people and the environment.
A list of the conditions which would mean fracking could not take place shall be made available quite soon.

following conditions are met.1)Unless an environmental impact assessment has been carried out:2)Unless independent inspections are carried out of the integrity of wells used;3)Unless monitoring
    has been undertaken on the site over the previous period;4)Unless site by site measurement, monitoring and public disclosure of existing and future fugitive emissions is carried out;5)In land which is located within the boundary of a groundwater source protection zone; 6)Within or under protected area’s;7)In deep level land at depths of less than 1,000 metres;
    8)Unless planning authorities have considered the cumulative impact of hydraulic fracturing activities in the local area;
9)Unless a provision for community benefit schemes to be provided by companies engaged in the extraction of gas and oil rock;10)Unless residents in the affected area are notified on an individual basis and not just by a general notice;11)Unless the substances used in the fracking fluid are approved by the Environment Agency;12) Unless land is left in a condition required by the planning authority, and 13)Unless water companies are consulted by the planning authority.

  64. It was good to see President Obama speaking to a Meeting of Young
People in London recently. Where he called upon Young People to
reject isolationism and cynicism. Birley Labour Party supports

  66. Since the cruel murder of Jo Cox there has be no postings on the
Birley Blog, perhaps thats as it should be at a time of Public
Grief. We in the Labour Party are both very sad at the loss of Jo
an ordinary lass with extra ordinary qualities. She only wanted to
try and make the world a better place. Not so much for herself but
others, she lived a simple life and helped to enrich the lives of
others with her example of being able to listen and have empathy
with the plight of those people in need.
JO LOVED HUMANITY, OVER THESE PAST FEW DAYS HUMANITY IN ITS MANY
    FORMS HAS SHOWN ITS LOVE IN RETURN. jO HAS SHOWN WE MUST ALL LEARN TO lOVE OUR NEIGHBOURS. Kenneth Curran Snr;

  67. I wish to report the sad death of my friend of over 40odd years of Jack Barry Scott.Barry as he was always called
died at home on the 23rd of June aged 84 yrs of age. He was a quiet man who was very concerned about the Local Environment after his wife Doreen who died of Cancer a few years ago. Barry needed to find an interest it was that
which led him along with a small group of elderly men to set up the “Friends of Frecheville Park and Pond Group”
Who have been responsible for transforming the area adjacent to the Frecheville Community centre. The group now
has lady members helping in their work. Barry Scott was quietly proud of what they collectively were able to
achieve. In paying my personal tribute to Barry for his contribution to improve the local environment I also wish
to thank all of the volunteers who have given their time and labour freely for the mutual benefit of all.It is a
great joy to see so much wild life living in the centre of the estate. Thank You. Kenneth R.Curran

  68. If today’s temperatures 86 in the shade at 5.15pm indoors is the result of Climate change with thunderstorms
forecast in many places, rainfall of about 1 months rain in a few Hours is unsettling news. By and large Birley
Ward is lucky to be situated on a ridge of the Moss Valley to the South and the Rother Valley to the east meaning that rainwater drains away quickly. It is in the valley bottoms where flooding is liable to occur. For
anyone trying to grow vegetables or fruit in their Gardens or allotments heat on today’s scale is a two edged
sword. Up until a week ago the growth rate of vegetables was slow with all of June being cold and wet. Weeds are
in my opinion appear far more adaptable than vegetable plants to weather changes.Weeds appear to flourish at any
time. Keep out of extreme Sunlight and ensure you protect yourselves with Sun Cream while this heatwave lasts.
Drink plenty of water to prevent hydration. Take care. Kenneth R. Curran

  69. Yesterday Friday 29th of July I met with the Management Committee of the Sheffield S2 Food Bank which supplies
food parcels to needy families in Wybourn,Arbourthorne,Castle, Manor & Woodthorpe. The told me they had delivered
twice as many parcels of food during the first 6 Months of 2016 than they delivered in the whole of the previous
year 2015. They added the number of requests for help was increasing daily. This is an extremely serious situation, It now appears that some people are less well fed today, than folk were during the Second World War.
Here in our own City some folk are awash with money while others starve. There is something seriously wrong in our
society with the distribution of wealth.

  70. PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT!
There was some good news yesterday. The number of single use plastic shopping bags used by Shoppers in England has
plummeted by more than 85% after the introduction of a 5p charge last October figures suggest.Locally this should
mean the place looking less unsightly. It will also mean that wild life and in some cases our domestic pets and
young children are less at risk of being choked or ingesting plastic. It is also most important for the Ducks and
Swans on Frecheville Pond.More needs doing, For about 8M tonnes of plastic makes its way into the Worlds Oceans
each years posing a serious threat to the marine environment.

  71. The weight of traffic on Birley Lane is in my view one of concern, the stretch from Fox Lane down to the Fairway
Pub is really quite unsuitable for the nature of Heavy Transport which in recent years has increasingly used the
Road 20 odd years ago it was essentially a rural lane on the fringe of the Birley Estate. The Building of Crystal
Peaks and the Introduction of the Tram has changed the role of the former Rural Birley Lane. Now it is used on a daily basis by Heavy Articulated Lorries Trundling down to Crystal Peaks to supply Sainsbury’s M&S, Drakehouse and
the recently arrived ASDA store. The road itself is cracking up and beginning to slide towards the Golf Course
and Tram Track. I do not profess to be an expert, however given the fact we are approaching the winter months which will impose further stress upon the Road it is only going to be a question of time before serious problems
    occur.

biggest off shore wind turbine developer claims our future energy
commitments can be met without the £18bn Hinkley Point Project.

on time and on budget, giving the UK a reliable source of power if
combined with output from new biomass or gasfired plants. Source

  73. ATTENTION> ATTENTION. THIS IS FOR YOU! Today it has be revealed by
38degrees that the Government have a secret report which calls upon NHS managers in South Yorkshire to make cuts in Services
because they are £500 Million over spent. The Tories are Hell Bent
on Privatising OUR NHS. We have to put an end to the Austerity
Policies of this Tory Government, we need our Local Councils to
take a lead in mounting a massive Public Campaign.

  74. As the battle over tree’s continue to dominate the attention of the Local Media and the City Council. There is a
distinct silence from the Media and City Council over the issue I raised on this WEB SITE on the 26th of August
2016 where the Government in a secret report called upon NHS Managers in South Yorkshire to make cuts in services
because Sth Yorks Hospitals were £500 Million over spent. Since then further cuts in services have taken place as
the queue’s for Surgery have lengthened and the Debt is even worse. The is the direct result of political decisions taken by a Conservative Government that time and again have repeated that the NHS is safe in their hands. In the Sunday Observer 11th December The Head Lines-Shock figures show Tory plans “making social care worse”
I urge readers of this Blog to write to Clive Betts MP expressing your personal concern over what is taking place.
The time for the Electorate is to speak out now before the situation gets even worse. The more pressure the people
can exert the better. Waiting for another General Election to express your concern over the NHS may be too late to save it from being destroyed

  77. Thanks for stopping by my page! I’m Jen.
Even though I jokingly credit my aunt for my writing talent, I know that it is a talent I have fostered from childhood. Though my aunt is a writer, I also started out young.
I’ve always had a way with words, according to my favorite teacher . I was always so excited in English when we had to do a research paper .
Now, I help current learners achieve the grades that have always come easily to me. It is my way of giving back to students because I understand the obstacles they must overcome to graduate.

    1. Reading the two contributions from August on writing, writing is a great skill, to have a group of Writers in S12 is very heartening and
make what I regard as an very valuable contribution towards
creating a virile and exciting Community. Story telling is also an important subject which needs encouraging. Perhaps if there is sufficient interest shown to the recent contributions on the Birley
Labour Blog Something along the lines of an S12 Writers and
      Story Tellers Event could be organised for 2020 Kenneth R. Curran Snr;

  79. Who can write more clearly than you about such things!
I promise you, nobody, I’ve seen something like this only on https://oogst.org/creating-understandable-and-coherent-paragraphs/. I enjoyed the guide and
assume you have more such material? If yes, so please post it
because it is somewhat unusual for me in the current moment, and not only for me, that is my view.
Hopefully, I can get an in-depth guide of yours and take note of all of the news and the latest data.
