Local Councillors Visit Jaunty Way Shops

Birley Ward Councillors visited the Jaunty Way shopping area on Monday morning with officers to look at issues residents have raised. We have reported the over flowing bin to be emptied. Councillors were pleased to see staff from the Co-op emptying the two bins outside the shop. The councillors will be contacting shop owners to see how we can work together we can help improve the area. We will post more information on this shortly.

Birley Community Pre-school recently moved

Birley Community Pre-school have recently moved in to their new premises within the St Cyprian’s Church Hall on Birchvale Road and local Birley Councillors Bryan Lodge, Denise Fox and Karen McGowan were invited for a look around. The church hall has had a fantastic makeover and the architects working for St Cyprians have created a great facility that houses the pre-school along with flexible spaces for worship and community use. Sharon Hopkinson, Manager & Senior Early Years Practitioner, along with Jayne Humphreys, Deputy Manager & SEN Co-ordinator are rightly proud of the amazing new setting. Along with parents and volunteers from the Church, they have worked hard to give the outside of the building and grounds a makeover and match the stunning interior. The Birley Councillors have been pleased to support the Pre-School in recent years, especially over the last year as they worked to finalise new premises. “We’re proud that we have such a great facility for families within Birley” said Cllr Bryan Lodge “and we’re happy that we’ve managed to identify some funding for a wooden building in the grounds that can be used as an addition space for teaching and activities”.

Armistice Day at Frecheville Memorial.

A couple of our members represented the Birley Labour Party branch at the Armistice Day event at the memorial in Frecheville today. Although it was a very different event than usual it was still a moving occasion and we were pleased to see that Tony Downing, Sheffield’s Lord Mayor, was able to join us and stand alongside members of the Frecheville branch of the Royal British Legion.

Police Update on Local Anti-Social Behaviour Issues

Birley Ward Councillors have been informed by the police that following a number of incidents of anti social behaviour over recent weeks in the Frecheville and Woodhouse area, they have now issued a number of formal warnings to individuals involved.
These warnings have been issued under the anti social behaviour legislation and they will be monitoring the behaviour of these individuals over the next 12 months. The formal warnings issued are dependant on the age of the individual, the level of their involvement in the behaviour and whether we have previously dealt with them for other incidents.

The police understand that some incidents reported are of a criminal nature and they will always seek to prosecute where there is sufficient evidence of an offence along with positive identification of those involved.

South Yorkshire Police work closely with Sheffield City Council and Housing Associations to tackle anti social and criminal behaviour. They have been notified of these warnings and as a result this may affect the tenancies of any individuals involved.
Over the coming weeks, we will be working with Sheffield Council sending letters to residents in the Woodhouse area with information on how to report types of anti social behaviour

Remembrance Sunday – November 8th.

All over the country, events on Remembrance Day, this Sunday, will be very different from usual. Lockdown restrictions prevent us from attending large gatherings this year, but all of our councillors will be taking time, as usual, to remember those who lost their lives in various conflicts over the years.
The Birley Ward Councillors have proudly supported various projects in the past to commemorate the sacrifices of those who died and they are all members of the Frecheville Branch of the Royal British Legion.
These include the rededication of the trees of remembrance on Heathfield Road in 2014 and the installation of a bench at Frecheville Community Centre in 2018.
In addition, during her year in office as Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Denise Fox supported veteran’s organisations across the city as they commemorated the 100 years anniversary of the First World War.
We hope you will join us, at least in spirit, in remembering the sacrifice of so many on Sunday.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION from Councillor Bryan Lodge.
Sheffield City Council will be posting an online ceremony on YouTube and Facebook. The council reports, “The reimagined event which will consist of a short wreath laying and act of remembrance accompanied by one Bugler, will be filmed and will be available on our Youtube channel, Sheffield Council, and shared on Our Sheffield on Facebook at 11am on Sunday 8 November and again on Wednesday 11 November.”

Household Waste Recycling Centres remain open in national lockdown

Sheffield’s five Household Waste Recycling Centres will be open as normal during the four week national lockdown. Usage of sites has been high throughout the pandemic as people have been spending more time at home, and it is expected that this demand will continue throughout this second lockdown.

The sites are open between 10am and 4pm, on the days shown below.

Beighton Road, Woodhouse, S13 7PS Wednesday to Monday (10am – 4pm) Tuesday (Closed)
Blackstock Road, Gleadless, S14 1FY Thursday to Tuesday (10am – 4pm) Wednesday (Closed)
Greaves Lane, High Green, S35 4GR Friday to Tuesday (10am – 4pm) Wednesday and Thursday (Closed)
Longley Avenue West, Shirecliffe, S5 8WA Open 7 days (10am – 4pm)
Manchester Road, Deepcar, S36 2DT Thursday to Monday (10am – 4pm) Tuesday and Wednesday (Closed)

Due to social distancing restrictions, the sites do get busy. We share queuing times for the sites throughout the day and advise residents to check the current queuing times before travelling to a site, on our Twitter page https://twitter.com/Recycle4Shef

Residents are reminded that it is not acceptable for vehicles to queue outside the sites as this may cause potential danger for other road users trying to pass. Drivers will initially be asked to move on by the site staff, and failure to do so will be issued with a £70 Penalty Charge Notice.

More information about waste and recycling in Sheffield is available on the Veolia Sheffield website.
