New Premises for the Remember When Cafe

Fantastic news for local residents that the Remember When café will shortly be re-opening in new premises at Hutton Croft, Main Street, Hackenthorpe. The Birley Ward Councillors have been working hard to support Ruth in finding new premises. We are delighted for Ruth to continue with the much loved and needed memory and conversation café. We know the local residents will value the service Ruth provides in a safe and friendly environment, especially now in these uncertain times. The Councillors are looking forward to seeing residents enjoying refreshments once it is open.

Update from Trading Standards on Fireworks around Frecheville Pond


The Birley Ward councillors raised concerns with Sheffield Trading Standards regarding the Anti-Social Behaviour with fireworks around Frecheville Park and Pond. We were concerned as to how and where the young people obtained the fireworks from. Trading Standards have responded outlining the following action being undertaken as follows: “Each year, Trading Standards work in partnership with South Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service to tackle the issues around firework safety and anti-social behaviour arising from the unlawful supply of fireworks from both retail and domestic premises. This multi-agency approach is required as each agency has its own responsibilities under the applicable legislation.

This year, due to Sheffield’s Tier 3 status and associated Covid-19 risks to our young volunteer, we have been unable to carry out our usual programme of test purchasing for fireworks. We have instead agreed with South Yorkshire Police, for one of our enforcement officers and a police officer to carry out advisory visits to retail premises to remind sellers of their responsibilities and legal obligations. All fireworks retailers will receive a letter to reinforce the message and informing retailers of the effects of fireworks misuse on local residents as well as the legal requirements.

Both officers are aware of the particular issues raised in your locality and will be visiting all premises selling fireworks in the vicinity over the next two days to give a strong message to retailers in the area.”

Anti-Social behaviour around Frecheville Pond

Over the past few days The Birley Ward Councillors have been contacted by residents regarding the issues of Anti-Social behaviour including fireworks around Frecheville Park and Pond. Councillors have report the issues through to the police and council officers. The police have responded to say they will be going into Birley Academy to try to identify anyone involved. If they do identify the people causing this anti-social behaviour they will then deal with them with their parents. They have also said they will increase the patrols around the area.

Please do keep reporting incidents through 101. This will ensure the area is on the police hot spot list and can allocate resources accordingly.

Reporting continued incidents of fly tipping

Thank you to residents for continuing to report incidents of fly tipping across the Birley Ward. The latest incident on Newstead Grove outside the sub-station off Newstead Road has been reported by Councillors to be removed. As we have previously said we encourage anyone seeing fly tipping please do report it (this can be done anonymously). Any evidence you can provide would also be considered such as a vehicle registration number. Public asked not to walk through Norton Aerodrome land

Birley Ward Councillors understand that the Norton Aerodrome area has been used for many years by people walking their dogs and the general public who are just out to enjoy the open space. The main reason for the Council installing a security guard on site is in response to the many reports from members of the public. The security guard and his dog is to stop any fly tipping and anti-social behaviour, as well as to keep people away from the structures on the site until they are demolished.

There will be a notice handed out to people accessing the site, informing them that they are trespassing and that the site is private property and has its own dangers, such as uneven surfaces, unsafe buildings and environmental conditions.

It will also inform them there is a security guard on the site with dog support, we ask members of the public to be aware of this and consider the implications.

The notice below will be displayed at all the access locations on site next week.

Good News Frecheville Community Centre get £10,000 funding

Birley Ward Councillors are delighted to announce that Frecheville Community Centre has successfully been awarded £10,000 from the National Lottery Community Fund. The funding is to support the community and beyond to combat isolation and provide outdoor spaces during the ongoing Covid 19 Pandemic. The community will benefit from access to outdoor spaces being developed around Frecheville Community Centre including Remember When Outdoor Cafe, Volunteering Opportunities and Hugi Hub Family Centre outside space. The Community Centre and Birley Ward Councillors would like to thank Tracy Rodgers at Hugi Hub who has worked hard in successfully securing the funding.
